Free fonts for websites, apps and interfaces

Interface type has unglamorous requirements: clear at 14 px, distinguishable numerals, enough weights for hierarchy, and letterforms that do not tire the eye after a thousand words. The fonts in this collection meet those demands and keep file sizes reasonable when self-hosted.

Use them for marketing sites, dashboards, mobile apps, documentation and product UI. Download is free; shipping a font inside a web page or an app is distribution, so the license in the ZIP matters here more than usual.

Choosing and loading a UI typeface

Body text at 16 px with 150 percent line spacing is a safe default; go up, not down, on mobile. Pick a family with at least regular, medium and bold. Self-host the WOFF2 file, preload the one weight used above the fold, and set font-display to swap so text appears immediately. Check numerals, the capital I, lowercase l and digit 1 before committing.

Questions about fonts for websites and app ui

What is the best font size for web body text?
16 px as a minimum, with line spacing around 1.5. Smaller text increases bounce rate more than any design detail.
Can I embed these fonts in a website or app?
Web embedding and app bundling are specific license rights. Read the ZIP license; fonts released under open licenses allow both.
How do I keep fonts from slowing the page?
Self-host WOFF2, load only the weights you use, preload the first one and set font-display swap. Two weights are usually enough.
