Rotulo is a contrasted sans family which combines the Thick & Thin signpainter’s style and some 70s feeling in a huge font family with 90 styles.
A visit to an exhibition of Spanish movie posters by Jano was the beginning of Rótulo (Spanish for Sign) project. Classic thick & thin signpainter style was featured in many letterings of those posters, as it was a very common style in 60s and 70s Spanish design. Unfortunately, today very few Contrasted Sans are seen, something that was quite common years ago has fallen into disuse in favor of Helvetic monotony.
Rótulo recapture all that personality, with an extense range of weights and widths to be used in striking headlines and short texts.
Where Rotulo Font Family works best
Interfaces and dashboards
Rotulo Font Family keeps its shape at 14 and 16 pixels, which is where interface text actually lives. Numbers and capitals stay distinguishable in tables.
Decks and internal documents
Presentations are read at a distance; a clean sans with a strong bold is the safest hierarchy you can build in a hurry.
Signage and wayfinding
Simple letterforms survive angles, glare and movement, so Rotulo Font Family suits door signs, menus boards and exhibition panels.
Is Rotulo Font Family really free?
The download costs nothing and needs no account. What you may do with the font afterwards is set by its author: the license file travels inside the archive, and it is the only document that decides whether a commercial project is covered.
How do I install it on Windows or a Mac?
Three steps, no extra software:
- Download the ZIP and extract it (double-click on Mac, right-click → Extract on Windows).
- Open the .ttf or .otf file and click Install / Install Font.
- Restart the app you want to use it in — the font is now available system-wide.
What kind of work does Rotulo Font Family suit?
It sits in the Sans Serif Fonts group and reads as classic, headlines, retro, sans serif. That makes it a candidate wherever those qualities help: headings, packaging, social graphics and brand work. Set it at the size you plan to use before deciding.
