Free fonts for YouTube thumbnails and video titles

A thumbnail is judged in under a second at about 170 pixels wide, so its text must be short, heavy and high-contrast. The fonts below are extra-bold display and sans faces with simple shapes that stay legible with an outline, a drop shadow or a colour block behind them, which is how most successful channels set their titles.

They also work for video intros, lower thirds and channel art. Download is free; a monetised channel is commercial use, so check the license file in the ZIP.

Thumbnail text rules that hold up

Three to five words maximum, in capitals, at a size that fills at least a third of the frame. Use a thick outline or a solid shape behind the text, never place it over a busy area, and check the design at 168×94 px before uploading. Yellow, white or cyan text on dark backgrounds carries best; keep one font per thumbnail and vary size for emphasis.

Questions about fonts for youtube thumbnails

What font do big YouTubers use for thumbnails?
Extra-bold condensed sans serifs and chunky display faces, usually in capitals with a black outline. Free fonts in this collection give the same effect.
What size should thumbnail text be?
Design at 1280×720 and make the main text at least 200–250 px tall. If it is not readable when the image is scaled to 170 px wide, go bigger.
Can I use these fonts on a monetised channel?
Monetised content counts as commercial use. Many of these fonts allow it; the license file in each ZIP is the final word.
