FF Meta is the famous sans serif font family by Erik Spiekermann, distributed through FontFont. Designed in the late 1980s for the German Post Office, Deutsche Bundespost, FF Meta is currently one of the most widespread and appreciated fonts in the design field.
The design process of FF Meta font started in the late twentieth century when Spiekermann decided to develop a humanist sans serif that would be in a position to harmonize between the modern and the old fashion designs. This font family was first released back in 1991 by FontFont and was intended to serve as a universal typeface suitable for both printed and electronic media. Spiekermann’s obsession with the level of detail and his focus on readability made him create a font that was easily identifiable for its well-proportioned, fairly open letters and certain humanistic elements.
FF Meta includes 28 different weights, from Hairline to Black. These weights are provided in two styles, Condensed and Normal, with italics for each style.
FF Meta has advanced typographic capabilities, including an array of highly advanced typographic features. This encompasses the use of ligatures which help in creating smooth letter connections and small caps which provide an aesthetic form of typography in some texts. It also has alternates that add more options for the design of characters and case-sensitive forms that change the height of punctuation marks and other marks to match the height of the capital letters.
Moreover, FF Meta contains fraction figures, as well as super- and subscript characters that makes it suitable for technical texts. It has all the figure sets, both oldstyle and lining figures within the typeface family. All of these figure sets are offered in tabular (fixed) and proportional formats, which makes it possible to fine-tune the numerals’ appearance.
FF Meta typeface family does not only accommodate Latin-based languages but also the Cyrillic, Greek, and Hebrew scripts. This allows it to be a versatile font for use in many international design-related tasks due to the fact that it supports many different languages.
It is suitable in numerous designs and applications as a typeface. In print, it is an ideal choice for books, magazines, newspapers, and other kinds of corporate publications because it is quite legible and easy to read. This library offers a great variety of weights, which makes it possible to create flexible and clear structures for the pages of the website. Its humanistic features also give the design a friendly look.
FF Meta is also a good font choice for use in digital media – on websites, in blogs, and in user interfaces- due to its clear font and good rasterization on screens. Due to the variety of weights and styles, designers can develop innovative and efficient interfaces and designs. Furthermore, FF Meta is often suitable in branding and corporate identity projects, thanks to the refined and rather serious font appearance that speaks of trustworthiness.
