Gardez is an eye-catching display typeface, designed for use at large sizes and in short passages of text. Its highly-expressive features make it an ideal choice for packaging, logotypes, posters, magazine titling, and book covers.
Gardez was born from the merging of the typical forms and features of traditional garalde italics with those of an inverted contrast design – two styles that are traditionally very far apart. In contemporary design, visual taboos are falling and there is an insatiable appetite for unorthodox and challenging designs; we saw an opportunity to be brave and irreverent by combining two extremes into something very new and very different.
Dalton Maag Designer Rafael Saraiva developed a unique and perfectly-executed display typeface that captures the reader’s attention and remains with them. Gardez takes liberties that only digital display typefaces can: extremely large capitals, unapologetic swashes, and fluid, expressive strokes that purposefully defy the laws of legibility.
Gardez supports over 100 languages which use the Latin writing system. A free trial of Gardez is available for download, or you can buy licences online.
Where Gardez Font works best
Thumbnails and covers
Gardez Font is built to be recognised small. Three words, high contrast, and it survives being scaled to a phone screen.
Event and match posters
Display letters at full width make a date and a name readable across a room, which is all a poster has to do.
Merch and streetwear
Heavy display shapes print cleanly on fabric and stay legible when the garment moves.
Is Gardez Font really free?
The download costs nothing and needs no account. What you may do with the font afterwards is set by its author: the license file travels inside the archive, and it is the only document that decides whether a commercial project is covered.
How do I install it on Windows or a Mac?
Three steps, no extra software:
- Download the ZIP and extract it (double-click on Mac, right-click → Extract on Windows).
- Open the .ttf or .otf file and click Install / Install Font.
- Restart the app you want to use it in — the font is now available system-wide.
What kind of work does Gardez Font suit?
It sits in the Display Fonts group and reads as classic, creative, display, display fonts. That makes it a candidate wherever those qualities help: headings, packaging, social graphics and brand work. Set it at the size you plan to use before deciding.
